Mosaic Classes

"Queen of the Mosaic: Sharra Frank Shares Her Secrets"
The Rake Magazine's "Secret of the Day"
Review of Sharra's Mosaic Classes!

Here's what Sharra's students have to say!

"Taking Sharra's mosaic window class was just what I needed to get my creative juices flowing. I thought I would just teach myself from what I could find online or in books, but I am glad I took the class because Sharra offered so many little tricks of the trade and helpful hints that it really made a difference in my finished project. Now, I'm hooked! Sharra is a great teacher with a generous spirit. I highly recommend taking one of her classes." Felicia Washington Sy, Minneapolis, MN

"First of all, I had the most Delightful..inspiring..WONDERFUL time this past weekend! I have SO many projects in my mind..and I plan on taking this and the Mosaic Design & Creativity in November on.... you are a fab teacher and I just love the way I feel after I leave your classes!" Georgia P., Minneapolis, MN

"Thank you sooo much for sharing all your wonderful advice.  It helped kick start a passion that’s been burning inside me a long time." Susan D., Buffalo, MN

"Thank you for a wonderful sculpture class.  I learned so much and had a great time.  It's always an inspirational art-filled party at your studio - so many great things to learn and try, a fun bunch of fellow students, a cool environment and, of course, a fantastic teacher."
Janet H., Minneapolis, MN

"Thanks again for a wonderful class! You have opened up a whole new world for me that I have been wanting to enter for years. I am thinking of everything I see broken down into tiny pieces of glass now. There is a box of old vases in my garage that will soon be covered with mosaics, I'm sure. I must get myself some tools & start playing!" Denise F., Minneapolis, MN

"Hello Sharra, I took your glass-on-glass beginning mosaics class this summer and thoroughly enjoyed my experience.  Now, months later, I decided to make a few mosaics for holiday gifts and realized I had forgotten almost everything I learned in class!  Thank goodness for your amazingly thorough handouts.  Your how-to instructions, detailed notes on where to buy supplies (and which ones work the best) are incredibly helpful.  It's certain I would have been lost (and frustrated) without them! Thanks once again for a fantastic class and fantastic notes. Warm regards, Robin M."

When I first started teaching mosaics, in the Fall of 2004, the mosaic window hangings that I was making were becoming a huge hit. I decided to make the project into a class and I've now been teaching them on a monthly basis since.

It's a beautiful project since the glass lets the light shine through but it is also a perfect opportunity to learn all the basics of mosaic making. And not just the same old basics- I consider it a more advanced, mixed media, approach. Therefore, I recommend that my students take this first step class before taking the Mosaic Design and Creativity Class.

..........................................

In this class you will learn all the basic mosaic tools, skills & materials while creating a unique 8" x 10” window hanging with
Sharra’s glass-on-glass techniques.

Materials, tools and Sharra’s extensive Mosaic Handout provided.
Handout includes instructions, material & resource lists and more.

Use stained glass, gems, paper under glass, china, mirror, tiles
and recycled objects. Bring your own treasures too!

Outside of class work may be necessary. No experience needed.
Create the mosaic in the first class meeting, grout it in the second.
$125. All materials are provided.

Ages 12+ welcome.

STEP 2
Base & Sculpture Making for Mosaics Class

Click HERE for more student photos of this class.

In this class I teach how to create your own forms for your mosaic work. In 2005 I started sculpting my frames and adding dimensional parts to pre-made surfaces. Now I make them all from scratch. I've invented my own unique techniques and methods in creating light weight, durable and non-toxic surfaces and forms for mosaics.  I have spent hundreds of hours experimenting and dollars in material to find what works best.  What I use is easy, clean and great for working inside- no cement.  Students have created sculpted wall panels, free standing sculpture, bird houses, animals, fancy, dimensional frames, panels and more. Please let me know if you need help dreaming up a sculpture idea- that is my favorite part!

..........................................

Beware: A student once said she couldn't sleep
after taking this class... too many ideas
running wild in her head!

Take control of your mosaic form
instead of endlessly searching for
that perfect ready-made base.

Hands-on Learning: Tools, materials & sculpting
techniques that will change the way you
make art forever.

All materials provided. You just bring the big idea.
Also receive Sharra’s complete Sculpture Resource Guide.

Know that you can use your new skills and non-toxic
materials in your home- no big studio or garage required!

Past Projects include: fancy mirror frames, butterfly & dragonfly panels, bird & owl
sculptures, cat sculpture, bird house, abstract, free-standing
sculpture, sculpted portrait, free-standing tree sculpture, sculpted
floral wall panel, lily-pad wall panel and more!

Suitable sizes are within 30" x 30".
Project consultation before first class.

STEP 3
Mosaic Design & Creativity Class

Click HERE for more student photos of this class.

Plan, Design & Create!  Create your dream project in this class. Bring in whatever surface, base or sculpture you'd like (I can help you find the perfect thing or create it in the Base & Sculpture Class).  Plan out your material selections and colors with me the first day when we customize a mosaic vision and ispiration board for your unique project.

This class is about taking your mosaic work to the next level.  Through my ten + years of mosaic experience I've collected many tips, tricks and resources from endless hours of trial, error and research.  In this class I share it all with you.

For example, some material combos work together better than others, for aesthetic and technical reasons.  Some tile and adhesives are great for 3D or exterior surfaces and other are definitely not.  Backgrounds are deceiving and appear to be easy to just fill in "quick" but really end up being one of the most challenging parts- there are ways to make it easier. Have you heard of Wedi Board?  It's my favorite mosaic surface but it's biggest draw back is hanging it and finding it.  Also, the miracle adhesive I can't live without (hint, it's not Weldbond!).  Oh, and how to cover a 3D glass surface without the tiles slipping off? And what about finishing edges, making boarders and framing?

*New techniques that are being added to the class in 2012:
Making your own tapestry mirror tiles, gold leaf glass and antiqued mirror glass!

In addition to all the tech stuff we discuss how to keep the creativity flowing and explore what makes some designs soar when others fall flat- color, focal point placement, grout lines (direction, patterns, width).

It's non-stop learning and discovery plus a huge handout- I guarantee that this class will open up a whole new world to your mosaic work!  Any level of experience welcomed (Mosaic Window Hanging Class is recommended).

Past Projects include: tables, lamps, panels, windows,
mannequins, sculptures, mirrors, benches and more
.

Suitable sizes are within 30" x 30"

Project consultation before first class.
